The Dimetrodon is often referred to as a dinosaur. However, it is a primeval reptile, a so-called Pelycosaurus. The sail on its back was made of skin and bones, helping it warm itself quickly in the sun. If it wanted to cool down, it would position the sail parallel to the sun's rays. An apex predator of the Ciscuralian during the Permian period, about 286 million to 270 million years ago, it grew to a length of more than 12 feet. Fossils have been found in North America.
