Native Copper $40.00

Native Copper $40.00

Native copper is one of the few metals that occurs in pure, metallic form in nature. Composed entirely of elemental copper (Cu), it typically forms in the oxidized zones of copper deposits and volcanic basalt flows. These unrefined specimens display copper’s natural reddish metallic luster and distinctive branching or nugget-like shapes. Each piece is unique!

Features:

  • Composition: Pure elemental copper (Cu), often found with minor inclusions of other minerals such as calcite, quartz, or malachite.

  • Formation: Forms through hydrothermal processes or as a secondary mineral in the oxidized portions of copper sulfide deposits. In some cases, it crystallizes directly from molten lava.

  • Appearance: Characterized by its reddish-brown metallic color, high density, and potential to develop a greenish surface patina (copper carbonate) when exposed to air and moisture.

  • Geologic Sources: Significant deposits are found in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, Arizona, and parts of South America. These regions are known for some of the largest and most well-preserved native copper specimens.

  • Educational Value: Ideal for studying native elements, early metal use in human history, and geologic environments that support native metal formation.

These specimens provide a direct look at one of Earth’s naturally occurring metals and is perfect for geology collections, classrooms, or natural history displays.
