Pinolith $3.00

Pinolith $3.00

Tumbled pinoliths are polished stones composed primarily of magnesite (MgCO₃), dolomite, and graphite. They are named for their distinctive white, pine-nut-shaped magnesite crystals set within a dark gray to black matrix, giving them a unique and recognizable appearance.

Features:

  • Composition: Primarily magnesite, with dolomite and graphite. The magnesite forms as elongated, lens-shaped crystals that create the “pine nut” texture.

  • Appearance: White to grayish-white inclusions contrast sharply with the dark background, often creating a marbled or fibrous texture. The tumbled finish brings out this dramatic contrast.

  • Formation: Found in metamorphic environments where magnesium-rich fluids interact with carbonate rocks. Pinolith is most famously sourced from Austria.

  • Physical Properties: Relatively soft (Mohs hardness of 3.5–4.5), with a smooth, silky polish when tumbled. Composed of carbonate minerals, making them sensitive to acids.

  • Educational Value: Useful for studying mineral assemblages, carbonate rock textures, and crystal habit. Their unusual appearance also makes them helpful in discussions of mineral identification and rock origin.

Tumbled pinoliths are excellent additions to geology collections and educational settings, offering both visual appeal and mineralogical complexity.
