The Rosetta Stone is an ancient artifact of immense historical significance because it helped scholars decipher the mysterious Egyptian hieroglyphs, which had been unreadable for more than a millennium. Discovered in 1799 by a French soldier during Napoleon's campaign, the stone is inscribed with three scripts Greek, demotic, and hieroglyphics. In 1822 French linguist Jean-Francois Champollion successfully deciphered the inscripti9ons on the stone.
